Intatec supports water reforms and identifies opportunity for installers to fit water conditioners alongside new water meters

The UK government has announced sweeping water reforms, including the abolition of Ofwat (The Water Services Regulation Authority) and the creation of a new “super-regulator” to take its place. The move follows Sir Jon Cunliffe’s Independent Water Commission report, which described England’s water crisis as a modern-day “Great Stink” – citing years of underinvestment, rising bills, and widespread pollution.

Intatec, the UK manufacturer behind the award-winning ActivFlo catalytic water conditioner, has welcomed the changes. The new regulator will combine the Environment Agency, Natural England, the Drinking Water Inspectorate, and others – a step ActivTec sees as vital for restoring trust and accountability across the sector as well as providing safe, clean water.

A key recommendation adopted by the government is a mandate for smart water meters to be installed in all homes and commercial properties. This is a move aimed at reducing consumption and future-proofing the UK’s water supply. The introduction of smart metering has been widely supported across the sector, with both manufacturers and installers recognising the role it can play in fostering better water stewardship.

Stuart Gizzi, CEO of Intatec, has publicly welcomed the decision, commenting “We fully support the government’s decision to overhaul the regulatory system and introduce mandatory smart meters. But to get the most out of this change, we believe smart metering should go hand in hand with preventative measures like ActivFlo. Installed at the mains, ActivFlo is a simple, chemical and salt-free upgrade that protects plumbing and appliances from limescale – and it can be fitted at the same time as a meter. It’s a practical way to deliver added value for installers and long-term savings for homeowners, along with improved water quality”

ActivFlo is a whole-house water conditioner that uses a patented catalytic membrane to treat the water directly as it flows through the system. Unlike traditional salt-based softeners or in-line filters that clog over time, ActivFlo is chemical-free, maintenance-free, and proven to reduce limescale formation, while eliminating salt discharge into the water system. WRAS-approved and built in the UK, it comes with a 15-year guarantee and has a lifespan of 20 years.

Installed at the mains, ActivFlo is perfectly placed to complement smart meter fit-outs. The unit can be added in minutes during the same visit, giving homeowners a dual benefit, better control of usage and better protection of the system.

As the industry adapts to new standards, ActivFlo is positioning itself as a practical way for installers to provide added value and for households to enjoy cleaner, longer-lasting plumbing and appliances.
